Whether you like to travel or maybe just want to stick around the house this weekend, Regina may have just the thing for you.
It’s Mosaic’s “A Festival of Cultures,” an event where you can get a glimpse of the many different countries around our world right here at home.
For this year’s event, there will be 18 different pavilions holding events around the city. They’ll have food, drinks, and entertainment for you to take part in.
Thursday was the first official night of the festival, and according to its hosts, it was a success.
“There were a lot of people; I think our attendance was around 3000 the first day, and I think that was fairly similar to last year’s,” said Ronaldo Alvaro, a worker with the Philippines Pavillion. “It seems like people enjoyed the entertainment and the food; it looked pretty good for the first day, better than I expected,” said Alvaro.
This year’s pavilions are:
- African
- Balaton Hungarian
- Chinese
- Hellenic Greek
- Hispanos
- India
- Indigenous
- Italian
- Kyiv Ukrainian
- Latinos En Regina
- Matis Nation
- Miorita Romanian
- Philippine
- Polish
- Poltava Ukrainian
- Scottish
- Spirit of China
- and Austrian.
If you weren’t able to check out the event on its opening night or yesterday, today is the last day to check it out. If getting a babysitter is a concern, James Bryanton is the manager of the Scottish Pavilion, and he says that some of this year’s events are fun for the whole family.
“We’ve started over the last several years with a focus on trying to make it more family-friendly early in the day. Before 8:00 pm, we have a kid’s area with a number of activities. We’ve got a group here doing temporary tattoos with an airbrush. The Regina Conservatory has a table talking about some of the programs they have. We have a cultural area where we have people that are doing demonstrations of wool carting and spinning and then knitting with it; and of course, we have the kitchen with plenty of Scottish treats,” said Bryanton.
This year’s festival will also have a wide variety of foods you’ll be able to try. At the Scottish Pavilion, they’ll have Scotch eggs, butter tarts, a fly cemetery, and even a haggis poutine.
Today will be the last day to visit one of these many different pavilions, with the festival running from 2:00 p.m. to midnight.
