The City of Regina is doing more public engagement ahead of the Scarth Street Revitalization.
This comes after the results of a 2023 survey showing overwhelming support for keeping Scarth Street a pedestrian-only area.
So why is there another round of consultation?
Senior city planner Kim Sare said they are now gathering feedback on how people use downtown and what they would like to see and do on Scarth Street specifically.
Sare says this input will help the city shape its vision and design.
Right now, Sare said the city had received feedback at pop-up events like at last weekend’s I Love Regina Day, and the city also plans on asking opinions at the Farmer’s Market and on Scarth Street itself.
“And then also gathering feedback from folks online on our Be Heard site. That’s largely just trying to get information from people on what they visit, why they come downtown already, and then also what they would like to see and do on Scarth Street,” Sare told 980 CJME on Tuesday.
“What (we’re) looking for (is) kind of a brainstorming aspect of what ideas people have that they want to share with us and what they would like to see for the future.”
Sare said the work will also include consultation work with businesses on Scarth Street in September.
The work will continue until the end of the year and will be brought back for review and refinement in January, she said.
“The process right now is pretty big, and we are looking for ideas that people have and that will be used to form a draft vision and design in January that will look for further feedback that will then be taken to council in spring of 2025,” Sare said.
Sare said the outreach is in its early stages but so far people have suggested ideas for Scarth Street like guided tours, hosting entertainment and other attractions, attractions for kids and unique shops.
