Students and staff at Evan Hardy Collegiate have been invited to wear purple when they return to the Saskatoon high school tomorrow in a shortened school day in an attempt to begin healing.
Tomorrow will be the first day that students are back after a 15-year-old girl was set on fire at the school on Thursday afternoon.
Purple was the victim’s favourite colour and the family of the victim had extended the invitation, principal Karen Peterson said in a newsletter to parents on Monday.
A 14-year-old student appeared in Saskatoon Provincial Court on Friday charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and arson in relation to the incident, which left some students “scared and shocked”.
The grandmother of the injured girl says the teen is in an Edmonton hospital but declined to provide details about her condition.
In the newsletter, the school said staff returned to the school on Monday and “there were many healing conversations”.
The school decided on a half-day of school tomorrow in recognition of the fact that some students may find the return challenging, and said that families are welcome to accompany their child.
Refreshments will be provided and additional teaching staff and counselling support will be available to all students, the school said, adding that police officers would also be at the school to support the return.
The school said hallway where the incident occurred had been cleaned and temporary flooring installed and replacement prioritized.
