Sask. set 13 new heat records on Sunday: Environment Canada

The scorching heat on Sunday toppled a number of heat records around Saskatchewan.

Many of the records had been standing for more than four decades.

According to preliminary figures from Environment Canada, Sunday marked the hottest September 8 on record in 13 communities around the province:

• Elbow: 34.8 C (previous record was 34.5 C, set in 1981)
• Indian Head: 34 C (previous record was 32.6 C, set in 2003)
• Last Mountain Lake: 34.8 C (previous record was 33 C, set in 1981)
• Lucky Lake: 35.1 C (previous record was 33.5 C, set in 2017)
• Maple Creek 34.5 C (previous record was 33.6 C, set in 2017)
• Moose Jaw: 34.8 C (previous record was 34.4 C, set in 1981)
• Outlook: 34.4 C (previous record was 34 C, set in 1981)
• Rockglen: 31.8 C (previous record was 31.4 C, set in 1998)
• Swift Current: 34.1 C (previous record was 34 C, set in 1981)
• Watrous: 35.1 C (previous record was 33 C, set in 1981)
• Weyburn: 33.2 C (previous record was 33 C, set in 1982)
• Wynyard: 32 C (previous record was 31.4 C, set in 1981)
• Yorkton: 33.3 C (previous record was 32.7 C, set in 2003)

More heat records could fall on Monday, as the hot temperatures continue across much of Saskatchewan before moderating as the week continues.

The Saskatoon area is expected to reach 32 C on Monday, according to Environment Canada’s forecast, while the Regina area is expected to reach 35 C.
