Saskatoon police briefs: Hate crimes unit investigating U of S incident

Saskatoon police are investigating a “hate-related incident” reported on Thursday.

Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) said in a a news release on April 4 that its hate crimes unit is investigating a complaint about “a technical breach” that happened during a meeting on the University of Saskatchewan campus on April 3.

Police said unknown suspect(s) online displayed inappropriate images and video while voicing hateful rhetoric.

The force said it is working with U of S Protective Services and investigating the incident as wilful promotion of hatred.

Two charged with weapons offences

A 21-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman are facing weapons charges after SPS officers were called to the Pleasant Hill neighbourhood on Thursday.

Police said in a news release on April 4 that a call came in around 3:30 p.m. on April 3, reporting a man with a gun in the 1500 block of 20th Street West.

SPS said officers found the suspect, who had a loaded, modified firearm as well as a can of bear spray, a knife and ammunition.

The man was arrested, along with a woman he was with, who had a machete, police said.

A man believed to be the victim was later found by police with minor injuries, and he reported being robbed of his belongings and shot by the man who had been arrested.

The arrested man is facing five firearms-related offences including discharging a firearm with intent, robbery, possession of a dangerous weapon and carrying a concealed weapon.

The woman who was arrested has been charged with possession of a dangerous weapon, carrying a concealed weapon and breaching conditions.
