Starting this fall, high school students with Prairie Spirit School Division in Martensville and Warman will have to pay to ride the bus.
A letter sent to parents from the school division states that high school students will have to pay a $250 annual fee for transportation for the upcoming school year. Transportation will only be available for students who live more than 1.5 km away from the school.

A lack of provincial funding for high school transportation in both cities was cited as the reason behind the change, and the fee will help cover the cost of transit for students who have to walk a long distance.
“Saskatoon school divisions do not provide transportation for high school students and students must rely on city buses at their own cost,” the letter said. “We are charging less than what students are paying for that service in Saskatoon.”
“We have communities in Prairie Spirit where elementary students live as far as 1.4 km from school and do not receive busing,” the school division said in a statement. “We believe it is reasonable to adjust the high school walking distance in Warman and Martensville to be a similar distance.”
Elementary students in the school division who live more than one kilometre from their school are eligible for transportation and will not have to pay a fee.
Payments for the high school bus service will be collected in August.
