Whether it’s news from your neighborhood or what’s happening across the globe, 980 CJME and 650 CKOM work hard to keep you informed.
Now, that day-to-day work has earned recognition with six nominations for outstanding journalism awards in the prairie region.
980 CJME and 650 CKOM are in the finals in the Best Newscast category at the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) Canada’s annual awards.
980 CJME’s entry was a newscast from October of 2024, the morning after the provincial election. It featured stories on the Saskatchewan Party’s historic fifth term along with coverage of a school bus crash.
For 650 CKOM, the newscast was from June of 2024, the morning after the Edmonton Oilers’ loss in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final. The broadcast featured stories from the small Saskatchewan town where the team’s coach grew up, along with coverage of the clean-up after a tornado touched down in Carrot River.
The association also recognized the collective efforts of our two teams as finalists in the News – Special Live Events award for our nearly five-hour election night broadcast, and the Continuing Coverage award for our six-month-long coverage of the inquests into the mass stabbing on the James Smith Cree Nation and nearby Weldon in 2022.
The RTDNA has also recognized individual members of our news team.
Senior reporter Lisa Schick’s work at the inquest was shortlisted in the Feature News – Audio category, while Brittany Caffet’s keyhole look into the restoration of the Lawrence House outside Hanley was shortlisted in the Feature News – Digital category.
The prairie region winners will be announced on June 4.
