The Liberal government’s regulations require that 20 per cent of all new passenger vehicles sold in Canada be zero-emissions vehicles by 2026, with the benchmark rising annually until reaching 100 per cent in 2035.
Electric vehicles – including both fully electric and hybrids – accounted for just 15 per cent of Canada’s new vehicle registrations in 2024.
“This is Mark Carney’s vision for Canada — a country where you don’t get to choose what kind of car you drive, where prices on everything skyrocket to fund his radical ideology,” Poilievre said.
“I have nothing against electric cars. If you want one, buy one. Free choice.”
Meanwhile, Canada’s tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles are being blamed for massive tariffs on Canadian canola, which took effect today.
Poilievre, who lost is Ottawa set in the recent federal election, is currently campaigning in the Alberta riding of Battle River-Crowfoot, with the byelection set for Monday.
