Dani Halvorson told 980 CJME’s Gillian Massie on Aug. 11 that she woke up to screaming sirens around 2 a.m. while her partner heard up to 17 gunshots.
She said the pair ran outside and watched paramedics take the girl from a nearby house.
She said crime has been on the rise in the neighbourhood, but it’s never been something like this.
“You hear cop cars … but yeah, a shooting is obviously something fairly new in this area,” Halvorson said.
“To hear multiple gunshots and it’s a young girl, that’s an innocent person in all of this. It’s scary for sure.”
Zarshaid Akbar was originally supposed to drive the girl and his own kids to summer classes being held at a mosque in the city.
Those plans came to a halt when the girl’s father told Akbar she had been shot.
“I’m feeling very sad to hear about this,” he said. “Being a parent, it is not easy to (hear) this.”
Akbar and his wife said they won’t let their kids play in the green space near the house any longer because of this.
Anyone who has information is asked to contact the Regina Police Service at 306-777-6500 or Regina Crime Stoppers at reginacrimestoppers.ca or 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
