Police patrol officers were working with the Aerial Support Unit (ASU) investigating a series of break-and-enters in the 800 block of Athol Street. ASU spotted a vehicle leaving the area where a male matched the description of the break-and-enter suspect last seen, according to police.
When the patrol grounds unit initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle, one of the two male passengers exited the vehicle and fled on foot.
The Regina Police Service (RPS) Canine Unit tracked the suspect and found him hiding behind a large fence.
“The suspect ignored police commands to stop, once again running away from the area. He was arrested a short distance later by patrol officers,” police said in a release.
A 27-year-old man faced charges like possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order, carelessly storing a firearm, possessing a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, unauthorized possession of a prohibited device or ammunition in a motor vehicle and possessing a loaded prohibited firearm.
The 39-year-old man is charged with three counts of possessing a firearm contrary to a prohibition order, carelessly storing a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, possessing a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, unauthorized possession of a prohibited device or ammunition in a motor vehicle and resisting arrest.
The second suspect remained on scene and was arrested without further incident. The two males were not found to be responsible for the break-and-enters on Athol Street.
Man arrested for dangerous driving and evading police
A 37-year-old man, who attempted to evade police in a high-speed chase this past weekend, was charged and made his first court appearance in Regina Provincial Court on Tuesday.
The man was charged with operating a vehicle dangerously to the public and failing to comply with conditions of a release order after he tried evading a traffic stop on Aug. 31, reported the police.
At about 2 a.m., patrol officers saw an SUV driving with no lights in the area of Seventh Avenue and Lewvan Drive.
The SUV turned north onto Lewvan Drive and continued toward Fourth Avenue before police turned on their emergency lights, attempting a traffic stop, but the SUV turned east on Fourth Avenue, where it “accelerated at a high rate of speed evading police,” read the statement.
ASU followed the vehicle to the 600 block of Robinson Street at speeds of upward of 100 km/h in the residential area. ASU reported the suspect vehicle had been parked, but no one had exited.
When ground patrol officers approached the vehicle, officers commanded the driver to exit.
The driver fled the scene again, going through the city’s central part, where he ran a red light and nearly collided with another vehicle.
The driver travelled north on Fleet Street, out of the city limits.
An hour and a half later, after driving through several rural roads, the vehicles with two occupants came to a stop.
The RCMP, the Regina Police Service (RPS) Canine Unit, RPS Tactical Support Unit and RPS Patrol Unit all assisted in the arrest.
The 37-year-old man made his first court appearance in Regina Provincial Court on Sept. 2.
