The University of Regina Rams kept their winning ways going at their home opener at Leibel Field in Regina on Friday night, beating University of Alberta Golden Bears 47-23 in Canada West football action.
The nationally ninth-ranked Rams, who were winners last week against University of Calgary Dinos, got things going early in the first quarter after a safety gave them a 2-0 lead before Alberta responded with a seven yard touchdown pass from fourth-year quarterback Eli Hetlinger to receiver Erik Torhjelm, making it 7-2.

Regina responded two minutes later with quarterback Noah Pelletier finding receiver Renzel Arinaza to give the Rams a two-point lead. An Alberta field goal with just under two minutes left in the quarter then brought the score to 10-9.
In the second quarter, Rams running back Marshall Erichsen ran 17 yards into the endzone and then Pelletier ran one in himself, giving the Rams a 23-10 lead. The Bears replied with a touchdown pass from Hetlinger to make it 23-17 at the half.
In the third quarter, Regina kicker Ty Gorniak kicked a field goal, before running back Christian Katende ran in his first touchdown of the night extending the Rams lead to 33-17.
Alberta started off the fourth quarter with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Hetlinger making it 33-23, but that was the last time the Golden Bears would score in the game.
Regina scored two more touchdowns, including a 109-yard pick-six from defensive back Carson Sombach, for the victory.

It was a full team effort that Rams head coach Mark McConkey was proud of.
“It seems like when we’re on and clicking, things are going well for us,” he said. “We dealt with adversity again today, but the guys did a great job of responding and they were able to execute when it mattered the most.”
The Rams dominated the line of scrimmage, finishing with a 298-67 edge in rushing yards. Both Erichsen and Katende became the first University of Regina teammates to rush for 100 yards in the same game.
“I thought both of our lines were outstanding. Getting close to 300 yards rushing is nearly unheard of in this conference and to hold them to under 70 yards rushing is also extremely impressive,” McConkey said.
Pelletier finished the night going 14 for 18 on pass attempts.
The Regina Rams (2-0) now head west to take on the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds (1-1) on Friday.
