A classic Saskatchewan Prairie Football Conference (PFC) rivalry was renewed on Saturday night at Mosaic Stadium, as Regina Thunder played host to the Saskatoon Hilltops.
The Thunder (3-0) were looking to continue their winning ways over Saskatoon (2-1) but after a tight match the Hilltops came out on top 18-15.

For Saskatoon it was a chance at revenge after the Thunder ended their season a year ago in the PFC final.
The scoring got started with a Regina safety which gave the Thunder an early 2-0 lead, before Saskatoon tied things up with a safety of their own.
In the second quarter, Hilltops fifth-year running back David Collins claimed the game’s first touchdown, giving Saskatoon a 11-2 lead.
Regina responded before the end of the second quarter after a field goal from kicker Shawn Green cut Saskatoon’s lead to 11-5.
In the third quarter, Regina took the lead with a touchdown pass to receiver Lucas Di lorio.
With the score 12-11 for the Thunder heading into the fourth quarter, Green then extended Regina’s lead to 15-11 after another field goal, before Collins ran in his second touchdown of the game for the Hilltops with just over two minutes remaining for the 18-15 final score.
The two PFC powerhouses are now tied for first in the standings.
Next game for both teams will be on Sept. 14, when Saskatoon takes on Calgary Colts in Calgary, while the Thunder faces the Winnipeg Rifles at Leibel Field.
Thunder head coach Scott MacAulay told 980 CJME before the game that it’s always his favourite home game of the season, as players’ passion and enthusiasm is on full display.
“This is widely considered the most heated rivalry in junior football,” MacAulay said in a statement. “With first place and provincial bragging rights on the line, we’ll be ready.”
Players and coaches from the Regina Youth Flag Football League were invited to attend Saturday’s game for free if they wear their team’s jerseys, and donations for the local food bank were also be collected. Fans who brought a donation were be entered to win Co-op gift cards or Keith Urban concert tickets.
“We’re always excited to welcome our provincial rivals to Mosaic Stadium,” Thunder president Murad Al-Katib said earlier.
“The real winners will be Saskatchewan football fans, who get to see the top two teams in the PFC and some potential future CFL stars.”
