“During the course of an investigation, Regina Police Service officers discharged their firearms fatally wounding an individual,” the police force said in a statement.

At the scene of the shooting, parts of a parking lot were taped off by police on Friday morning. (Lisa Schick/980 CJME).
Police did not describe the circumstances around the shooting or say how many officers were involved. No details about the victim were shared.
“We understand that this incident is of significant public interest and ask for patience as the facts are gathered,” the Regina Police Service said.
But despite asking for patience, the police force noted that it will not release any further information on the fatal incident because the shooting is being investigated by the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT), a provincial watchdog organization mandated to investigate cases where a serious injury or death arises as the result of the actions of police in the province.
“Additional information will be provided by SIRT as it becomes available,” the police force said.
980 CJME has reached out to SIRT to request further details on the shooting.
Police had part of a parking lot adjacent to an apartment building taped off on Friday morning, and forensic investigators visited the scene.
A woman who lives in the area told 980 CJME she heard a “bang” while she was taking her dog outside.
Another woman, who spoke from her balcony, said she didn’t hear the shooting, but woke up at around 11:30 and saw flashing lights in front of the apartment building and at an intersection down the street.
She said there are people of all ages in the building, and while she expects many of them will be upset by the news of the shooting, she added that she’s confident in the city’s police service.
