According to the Regina Police Service, officers saw a man moving inside the vehicle, and he exited the vehicle when he was told to do so.
Police then tried for several minutes to wake a sleeping woman in the back seat.
“A firearm was visible on the seat next to her and, because of the elevated safety risk, members of the Tactical Support Unit (TSU) and Canine Unit were called in,” said the police force in a statement.
“Following a lengthy process to get the female suspect to exit the vehicle, she emerged but resisted arrest. A Police Service Dog (PSD) was deployed and the female was eventually taken into custody. During the course of the arrest, the female suspect was bitten by the PSD. She was taken to hospital by EMS for treatment of injuries consistent with a dog bite.”
Police said they conducted a search of the vehicle after the arrest and discovered a sawed-off rifle and a shotgun, which led to the arrest of the 25-year-old man.
He is facing charges of possession of firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order, possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, unauthorized possession of firearm in motor vehicle and unauthorized possession of a firearm.
He made his first appearance at Regina Provincial Court Wednesday morning.
Police did not say if the female passenger who was bitten by the police dog was charged.
One man arrested following weapons offence and assault
Three men are facing several weapons-related charges following a reported assault Tuesday morning.
Regina police responded to a call at a business on the 1800 block of 9th Avenue North at about 1:50 a.m.
“Information received indicated that two males were running up and down the street wielding a shotgun,” the police force said in a statement.
“The caller told police the suspects hid the firearm behind a garbage bin before the individuals entered the business.”
When police arrived at the scene scene, they said they found the sawed-off shotgun and arrested the two men. A short time later, a third man was arrested after he was found walking down Broad Street North.
“A search of the suspect, subsequent to arrest, revealed a sawed-off rifle,” said police in a statement.
Moments before police received the call to the business, a rideshare driver flagged down officers travelling southbound on Broad Street. The rideshare driver told police he was giving a ride to the three suspects.
“(The rideshare driver) was assaulted and then threatened with what appeared to be a machete. He stopped his vehicle on Broad Street near 5th Avenue North and ordered the suspects to get out, which they did,” police explained in a statement.
