A Regina woman has cancelled her planned trip to Cuba due to a worsening U.S. embargo on the country.
Stacey Domoslai has previously gone to Cuba seven times before, but elected to put her plans on hold as the island nation is suffering from a fuel shortage stemming from the blockade.

“It was extremely disappointing; we had such anticipation of going,” Domoslai said. “We had it booked early in December, so there was no uncertainty at that point that we’d be able to go, and so this is certainly a great disappointment to not be able to go to Cuba.”
Cuba has been under an embargo from the U.S. since 1960, costing the country anywhere from $130 billion to $170.7 billion since it was imposed, according to estimates from the United Nations.
Recently, the U.S. has tightened its embargo measures and has begun seizing tankers from Cuba’s ally Venezuela, which was Cuba’s primary source of fuel.
“We made a decision to cancel yesterday because of the shortage of fuel to get planes out of Cuba,” Domoslai said.
“So we understood that WestJet was either offering cancellation or transferring without penalty so that’s when we decided that we would make a change.”
Domoslai said her favourite thing to do in Cuba is interact with the residents.
“We wanted to take some supplies to the locals, because they’re so short of everything right now, and it’s particularly bad now, we wanted to take a few things that we could to help the folks on the resort,” she said.
“We were just planning on enjoying the beach, the sun and sand, the water and the sights of the resort.”
Domoslai said it’s the first time she’s ever had to cancel a trip. She said she hopes for an end to the embargo as it would be “great for everybody concerned.”
She added that she wished there were a way for her to help.
“I just hope that anybody who’s booked to go to Cuba is able to have alternate plans and able to enjoy some other destination, as we’re going to be able to do,” she said.
“I just ask that everybody pray for the people of Cuba, because they need all the help we can give.”
