If you don’t have a date for Valentine’s Day, don’t worry – there are plenty of fish in Saskatchewan.
The Saskatchewan Environment Ministry is inviting people across the province to “trade up the roses for a rod and reel and hit the ice” from Saturday through Monday, when fishing is free across the province.

While no licence is required to fish in any provincial bodies of water over the long weekend, regular rules like possession limits will still be in effect, and a licence is required for anyone who intends to take their catch out of the province.
“We are lucky to have some of the world’s best fishing right here in Saskatchewan,” Darlene Rowden, Saskatchewan’s environment minister, said in a statement.
“Free Fishing Weekend is the perfect chance to get out, explore our beautiful province and enjoy angling with friends, family or your favorite fishing partner.”
Anyone heading out for some fishing was reminded to put safety first and check the ice thickness before venturing out on any frozen body of water. Some lakes also have specific regulations around fishing, the ministry noted, which can be found in the Saskatchewan Anglers’ Guide.
