After two strikes in planning trips to warm destinations, a Regina woman says she and her husband will be staying closer to home.
Stacey Domoslai said she was forced to cancel plans for a trip to Cuba this month due to the U.S. embargo on the country, which led to a shortage of fuel and cancelled flights. Plan B, unfortunately, was a trip to Puerto Vallarta. That plan is now off as well, after an outbreak of cartel violence over the weekend led to warnings for Canadian travellers in the region to shelter in place.

The unrest was sparked by the reported killing of a drug cartel leader during a government operation, and more than 26,000 Canadians in Mexico have registered with Global Affairs Canada.
“The way things were looking, it was so dangerous. There’s no way that we were going to risk going,” Domoslai said on Monday. “And my husband agreed.”
Many flights to the region were cancelled, but some Canadian airlines resumed service to Puerto Vallarta on Tuesday.
Domoslai said she was able to cancel her trip through Sunwing, receiving a full refund. But after exploring the Dominican Republic as a third option, the couple ultimately decided to stay in Canada.
“The world is in such an uproar right now that I think travelling anywhere is actually becoming dangerous,” she said, adding that the hassle of making arrangements a third time is also not appealing.
“We have animals that need to be tended to, and getting care for them certainly takes some juggling.”
But despite her own cancelled plans, Domoslai said she thinks there are still some good options for Canadians who are still seeking an escape from the winter weather, suggesting European destinations like Spain or Portugal, or a cruise in the region.
In the meantime, Domoslai said she and her husband won’t be completely housebound. She said they’re headed for B.C. in April for a concert.
And as for a warm weather getaway?
“Our plan is to go to the Regina Floral Conservatory,” Domoslai said, joking that she’ll wear her bikini.
“We’ll go to the conservatory and enjoy the warmth and the atmosphere of a tropical getaway.”
