It was two different results for the Saskatchewan rinks at the Montana’s Brier on Monday in St. John’s, N.L.
Mike McEwen and his Saskatoon-based rink handled business against Northern Ontario and Sandy MacEwan’s rink in the afternoon draw with a 5-1 win and improved to 3-1 at the Brier.
Kelly Knapp and his Regina-based rink didn’t have as much success in the morning draw. Quebec was able to score two points in the 10th end to claim an 8-7 and drop the Saskatchewan provincial champions to 1-2.
Knapp will get another chance on Monday evening to add another win to his team’s record as he takes on Prince Edward Island’s Tyler Smith. That draw gets underway at 5 p.m.
In the McEwen matchup, the 2024 Brier runner-ups got out to a led wire-to-wire in the contest. The McEwen rinks, consisting of third Colton Flasch, second Kevin Marsh and lead Dan Marsh, put up a pair of points in the first end.
MacEwan, who is skipping in his first Brier, put up a single point in the second end.
It would be a while before another team would add to their total as the next four ends were blanked.
McEwen put up a single point in the seventh and then added single-point steals in the eighth and ninth ends to claim the win.
The Nutana Curling Club rink will next be in action on Tuesday morning against James Grattan’s New Brunswick team.
In the morning draw, Knapp and his Highland Curling Club was looking for a second-straight win at the Canadian men’s curling championships. The Knapp rink consists of third Brennan Jones, second Dustin Kidby and lead Mat Ring.
After a blank in the first end, Knapp’s rink scored a pair in the second. Quebec and skip Jean-Michel Ménard’s rink put up three points as an answer in the third end.
Saskatchewan scored a single point in the fourth, which Quebec answered with a single of their own in the fifth before stealing a point in the sixth.
Knapp once again scored pairs in the seventh and ninth ends but Ménard’s single in the eighth paired with two points in the 10th won the game for Quebec and saw them improve to 2-1.
