Nothing quite like going back-to-back for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies men’s hockey team.
For the second consecutive season, the Huskies are the best in Canada West after a 4-2 victory in Game 2 of Canada West men’s hockey finals to sweep the best-of-three series over the Mount Royal Cougars in Calgary.

The Huskies are celebrating their 13th conference title in program history and will be raising another banner inside Merlis Belsher Place following the victory.
Coming off a 5-0 shutout victory in Game 1 of the series on Friday night following a hat-trick from Chantz Petruic and 33 saves from goaltender Nolan Maier, the Huskies entered Saturday’s game with a chance at closing out the series.
The Huskies needed just 4:38 to open the scoring on Saturday, as Dawson Holt finished off a passing play off the rush to beat Mount Royal goaltender Shane Farkas.
Holt’s offensive prowess was on display later in the period with a highlight-reel pass to Carter Stebbings after batting the puck out of the air, setting up the former Swift Current Broncos for the 2-0 goal.
Near the midway mark of the second period, that lead stretched to 3-0 with Petruic springing Canada West rookie of the year Conner Roulette on a breakaway who buried the puck for the insurance goal.
Huskies continued to strike in the middle frame on the power play with 4:31 remaining, as Chase Bertholet sniped a shot past Farkas off the post and in to put the visitors comfortably out front with 20 minutes to go.
Mount Royal tallied back-to-back goals in the third period from Josh Tarzwell and Clay Hanus to cut the deficit to 4-2 with 7:09 remaining, but Maier shut the door the rest of the way to preserve the Game 2 championship victory.
In his first Canada West playoff run, Maier was named the series’ most valuable player with just two goals allowed on 63 shots against.
The win comes nearly a year to the day after the Huskies won their first Canada West championship since 2020, blanking the Cougars 3-0 in a winner-take-all Game 3 contest at Merlis Belsher Place.
