An MRI cassette for St. Joseph’s Hospital arrived in Estevan late last week, marking an important step for healthcare in southeast Saskatchewan.
The modular unit had signage on the side noting it was headed to Estevan’s hospital and highlighting that services would soon be available in the community.
Estevan-Big Muddy MLA and Minister of Rural and Remote Health Lori Carr said seeing the cassette arrive has sparked excitement in the area.

Carr explained that the cassette is the modular room that will house the MRI. She said getting it in place is critical to the installation process.
“It’s important to get it in place, get it hooked up to the hospital, get all the electrical in place so that when the MRI shows up, they’ll be able to facilitate the installation smoothly,” she said.
Carr also noted the impact for southeast Saskatchewan.

“When you look at the cassette moving across the province, it specifically talks about reducing wait times because this will really help the Southeast out,” Carr said.
Patients from other parts of Saskatchewan will also be able to access the MRI once it’s running.
Carr says seeing the cassette on site gives the community confidence that the service is coming soon.
“Hopefully sometime during the summer, those services will be up and running,” she said.
Emmanuel Health and St. Joseph’s Hospital will finalize the timeline once the installation is complete.
The MRI is expected to provide faster access to advanced diagnostic imaging, reducing travel for patients and improving healthcare across the region.
