Megan Gallagher’s father says family left ‘in the dark’ on Thomas Sutherland’s new charges

A man who was accused in the killing of Megan Gallagher before the charges were later stayed will soon be back in court, facing a new set of unrelated charges.

Thomas Sutherland, 46, was arrested on January 26. He’s facing multiple weapon-related charges in addition to other charges that include possessing a loaded, prohibited handgun and possessing fentanyl for the purpose of trafficking.

Brian Gallagher, Megan’s father, said he was “shocked” when he heard of the new charges, noting that he only found out through media reports.

Gallagher has attended a majority of the court appearances for those charged in his daughter’s killing.

Megan Gallagher was tortured and killed by a group of people in a garage on Weldon Avenue in September of 2020. Her body was then put in the back of the truck and thrown off the St. Louis Bridge into the South Saskatchewan River. Her remains were not discovered until two years later.

Nine people, including Sutherland, were originally charged in relation to her death, and seven of them were ultimately convicted.

In March of 2025, Sutherland’s trial was abruptly cancelled as charges of manslaughter and unlawful confinement against him were stayed.

“We were never given a reason why the charges were stayed in the first place, so we’ve been in the dark a lot about this since January,” Gallagher said.

“It is a little frustrating. We sit here and live on pins and needles and wonder if there’s anything happening, and nobody communicates with us.”

Gallagher said he has connected with Crown prosecutors who informed him that there is no intent to revive the stayed charges, and the time allowed to revisit the case will soon come to an end.
