Two people are dead after a fatal crash while a driver of a truck was allegedly fleeing fleeing from Estevan police on Friday.
Saskatchewan RCMP said in a news release on March 29 that the crash happened on Highway 39 about 16 kilometres southeast of Weyburn around 7:15 p.m. on March 27, killing a 46-year-old man from Estevan and 40-year-old woman from Lampman. Their families have been notified.

As the collision occurred in Weyburn RCMP jurisdiction, Mounties said that the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) had been notified.
Police said an Estevan Police Service officer with Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan was conducting proactive patrols and saw a truck driving above the legal speed limit on the highway. He attempted a traffic stop but the truck drove off at high speed.
The officer saw the truck hit the car on the highway a short time later, RCMP said, and started first aid before paramedics arrived.
The driver and sole occupant of the truck was taken to a local hospital by paramedics and later flown by STARS air ambulance to “another centre,” police said, adding the driver’s injuries were serious.
RCMP said it notified SIRT because of the Estevan Police Service officer’s interaction with the truck before the crash and SIRT had directed Saskatchewan RCMP’s Serious Crimes Unit to investigate under SIRT oversight.
SIRT is a civilian-led, independent body that investigates incidents where a person has died or suffered serious injury arising from the actions of on and off-duty police officers, or while in the custody of police, as well as allegations of sexual assault or interpersonal violence involving police.
Final reports into SIRT investigations are issued to the public within 90 days of the investigation ending.
