Regina’s Speaker’s Corner drainage renewal project got underway on Thursday, and work on the construction project is expected to last through the fall.
The project, when finished, is intended to allow for stormwater drainage throughout downtown and the surrounding area, according to the City of Regina.

Albert Street, the intersection at 19th Avenue and areas within Wascana Centre will be impacted by the project, the city noted. There will be a closure in place during construction on Albert Street between the Albert Memorial Bridge and Leopold Crescent, and the walking path along Wascana Creek at Angus Boulevard will be closed.
Added traffic restrictions are expected to come as work continues along 19th Avenue and Angus Boulevard, the city said.
Carolyn Kalim, Regina’s director of water, waste and environment, commented that “a city that invests in its infrastructure invests in its future.”
Kalim said the drainage renewal work will “play a key role in strengthening Regina’s stormwater network for years to come.”
In 2023, one of Regina’s main stormwater drains along the Albert Memorial Bridge collapsed. A temporary stormwater management system was put in place next to Speaker’s Corner in Wascana Centre.
“The design will ensure stormwater flows efficiently away from homes, businesses and roadways, directing water into Wascana Creek, reducing the risk of flooding and supporting continued growth in Regina,” the city stated.
Regina residents were reminded to plan ahead when construction zones might impact their commutes. Updated information about road closures and other city construction is available online.
