The game was a rematch from last year’s final, which Regina won as the Pat Canadians claimed their fifth gold medal at the tournament, putting them in a tie for the record.
Regina got back to the national championship tournament after beating the Moose Jaw Winmar Warriors for the Saskatchewan Male U18 AAA Hockey League title before beating them again in the Telus Cup West Regionals.
The Pat Canadians won their first three games of the tournament, beating the host Peterborough Petes 7-3, the Halifax Maxs 4-3 and then the Waterloo Wolves 7-0.
The Regina team was trailing early in the game against the Chevaliers, as Ludovic Plante put a puck past Regina goaltender Ben Meyer.
Malaki Martin evened things up in the contest, scoring before the end of the first.
In the second period, Lucas Morin put the Chevaliers up 2-1. Liam Pue answered for the Pat Canadians, and then Ryker Doka gave Regina its first lead of the game.
Maddox Schultz scored on the power play to add to that lead, and Grady Hodgins put Regina up by three just 1:15 into the third period.
But the Chevaliers battled back in the third with a trio of goals, as Loik Poulin scored while Logan Bêty and Simon Chartier both added goals on the man-advantage.
The Chevaliers got the game-winner from Christopher St-Hilaire just 3:37 into the extra period.
Regina’s Ben Meyer had 29 saves in the contest.
The Pat Canadians already had a spot clinched in the semifinals prior to the game. A win on Friday will clinch the number-one seed for the Pat Canadians as they take on the Okanagan Rockets, with puck drop set for 9 a.m.
