Sunday is Mother’s Day, when families gather and show appreciation to the backbone of the family.
Mothers and mother-like figures are vital to a family — they pick you up when you fall, talk to you when you feel down, and help many of us navigate our way through life from the start to adulthood.

But before you grab something random for a Mother’s Day present, try and give it a little bit of thought.
Petra Janssen, owner of Wascana Flower Shoppe in Regina, said that if you plan to pick up some flowers, you better make sure you’re getting the right ones.
She said there are a few that are more popular than the rest.
“(There are) a lot of trending flowers right now — your peonies, your tulips, those are your newer, trending flowers that everybody seems to want at this time of year,” she said.
Janssen said the age of the recipient can determine what flowers you should purchase.
“If it’s going to be an older lady or an older mom, I prefer to see them pick something longer lasting, something like carnations, because as we age, we want our flowers to last longer.
“For a younger mom or a new mom, they want instant gratification. They are the ones that want the peonies, the tulips, the trendy flowers,” she said.
If there’s one gift to avoid, Janssen said it is potted plants.
“I think we buy those because we think they want them to last. Any woman will buy herself a potted plant, but she won’t buy herself cut flowers,” said Janssen.
To make those flowers last as long as possible, she said there are a couple of things you can do.
“A fresh cut and fresh water almost every day. If you do that every day, your flowers will last and they will be so happy.”
