Residents in some Regina neighbourhoods woke up to broken windshields, damaged siding and dented cars after a major storm blew through on Tuesday.
The skies over Regina rapidly changed from bright blue with puffy clouds to dark and ominous in the early evening.
When it arrived, the storm primarily hit the north, northwest and central parts of the city. Residents in those neighbourhoods watched hail dent their vehicles as high winds battered their siding and trees, ripping off branches and leaves. Storm drains struggled to keep up in some areas, and streets flooded as drains became clogged with debris.

“I think the biggest report that we have is golf ball-sized hail,” said Kyle McAulay, a meteorologist with Environment Canada. “We might get some more reports today.”
The damage was evident on Wednesday morning, with fallen leaves and branches littering city streets.

Dave Kelly, who lives on Little Bay, in the city’s Uplands neighbourhood, said the storm moved in extremely quickly, hammering his home and vehicle with large hail for about 15 to 20 minutes.
“My truck sustained a lot of damage. We’re going to get an assessment done on the roof. The downspouts and eavestroughs were hit so hard there’s holes poked in them,” Kelly said.

“We’ll assess the damage. I’m going to get an SGI claim done on my truck. I’ll get the roof looked at on the house, and then I’ll start cleaning up.”
While the experience is a bit stressful, Kelly said dealing with major storms – and the damage they cause – is “a part of living in Saskatchewan.”

Pat More, who lives close to Kelly, said the intensity of the rain was something to witness.
“It was smashing against the windows,” More said.
“The west side of our house and my garage got the brunt of the hail. I’ve got vinyl siding cracked.”

More said he worried that his windows were going to shatter during the storm, which was the worst he’s seen in more than 30 years in the city. He said the rain left his street flooded.
“It was like a lake. Unreal how much water there was,” More said.
More said his sons are going to come by on Wednesday to help with the cleaning, and then he’ll start the process of getting insurance claims filed.
The storm seemed to hit some areas of the city very hard, while leaving other neighbourhoods largely untouched. More said his sons live south and north of him, and neither of their homes were hit hard by the storm.

Patricia Masse, another Uplands resident, said she wasn’t home when the storm hit, but she was out in her yard surveying the damage on Wednesday morning. She described the scene as “a mess.”

The windshield on Masse’s vehicle was smashed, she said, and her husband’s vehicle was also damaged. She estimated that the storm did around $8,000 in damage to her yard, where one shed was destroyed and another was peppered with holes by the large hail. She said her gazebo, greenhouse and hot tub cover were also damaged in the storm.

“I just finished cleaning up my yard yesterday,” she said with a laugh.
Masse said the storm even blew hailstones into her home, which were close to the size of golf balls.
“I’ve never seen it quite that big in my life,” she said.
“Just glad it wasn’t a tornado and nobody got hurt.”
