Beardy’s and Okemasis woman, 67, charged with manslaughter in death of child: RCMP

A 67-year-old woman from the Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation is facing charges in the death of a child.

According to a statement released on Friday by the Saskatchewan RCMP, officers got a report of a child in medical distress on the First Nation northeast of Saskatoon on May 10. Police said the child was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

The RCMP did not share the child’s name, age or sex, only saying they were “under the age of 12.

“We are not releasing the name of the child or accused in the event a publication ban is ordered, and to protect the identity of the child,” the Mounties said in a statement.

“We will not be providing additional information that may lead to the identification of the child.”

Police said the investigation, conducted in consultation with the Saskatchewan Coroners Service, determined the death was suspicious, and the 67-year-old woman was arrested at on the Cree nation on Wednesday.

She’s facing a charge of manslaughter, along with criminal negligence causing death, failing to provide the necessaries of life and abandoning a child.

Police said the woman appeared in Saskatoon Provincial Court on Thursday, and is due to appear in court in Rosthern next week.
