8:30 – As Canada looks for new ways to strengthen its economy and reduce its dependence on the United States, one idea gaining attention is the creation of new east-west pipelines. Alberta and Ontario’s premiers are proposing a pipeline to carry western Canada’s oil to the east. Heather Exner-Pirot, Senior Fellow and Director of Energy, Natural Resources and Environment at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute in Ottawa, joins the show to bring us up to speed on this announcement and what it could mean for Saskatchewan and the rest of the country.
Listener Question: Should Canada be doing more to use and move its own oil and gas instead of relying on other countries?
9:00 – Open phones – Evan goes to the phones to chat with listeners about what’s on their minds today. Call 1-877-332-8255.
10:00 – Family doctors are the backbone of our health-care system, but many say they’re spending almost as much time on paperwork as they are with patients. Saskatoon family doctor Dr. Jason Hosain joins the show to explain why he thinks reducing this burden would help recruit and retain more doctors in the province.
LQ: Would you support cutting paperwork for doctors if it meant they could spend more time with patients?
10:30 – Calling in sick could soon become a lot more complicated in Germany. The government is proposing that workers provide a doctor’s note from the very first day they’re off sick, saying the move is needed to reduce absenteeism and improve productivity. Critics argue it would overwhelm doctors’ offices, discourage people from staying home when they’re contagious and create more red tape than results.
LQ: Do you think we’re too lenient on sick days?
11:00 – Many Canadians say they’ve lost confidence in politics and are looking for ways to make government more accountable. A new paper by Lydia Miljan, a senior fellow at the Fraser Institute and author of Term Limits for Parliamentarians, argues that practical changes, such as a 12-year term limit for federal politicians, could strengthen Canadian democracy without reopening the Constitution. She joins Evan to share her findings and what major changes would occur if this were implemented tomorrow.
LQ: Should there be term limits for politicians in Canada? Why or why not?
11:30 – Île-à-la-Crosse is marking 250 years as one of Canada’s oldest communities with a six-day celebration happening right now and running through tomorrow. It features canoe races, cultural performances, Métis and Cree storytelling, live music, and more. To talk about this important event, Evan is joined by Maureen Belanger, Île-à-la-Crosse 250th Anniversary event coordinator.
12:00 – Evan revisits his conversation with Heather Exner-Pirot, Senior Fellow and Director of Energy, Natural Resources and Environment at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute in Ottawa.
