A 22-year-old man is facing charges after allegedly breaking into a high school on the Onion Lake Cree Nation last month and starting a fire inside.
According to the Saskatchewan RCMP, officers got a report about a break-in at the school on the First Nation north of Lloydminster shortly before 6 a.m. on June 27. While police did not name the school, a representative for the Cree nation’s education department confirmed the fire happened at Sakāskohc High School.

“Officers responded, along with Onion Lake Cree Nation Peacekeepers. During a search of the school, officers determined there was a fire in the building. Onion Lake Creen Nation Fire Rescue responded,” the RCMP said in a statement issued on Wednesday.
“The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire. Investigation determined the fire was suspicious in nature.”
The RCMP did not initially detail the extent of the fire damage, but the Cree nation’s representative said laptops in a computer lab were damaged. When asked, RCMP shared that the areas of the school most affected by the fire included the gymnasium, the running track and several nearby rooms.
Police said a 22-year-old resident of the Cree Nation was arrested following an investigation into the fire. He’s been charged with arson causing damage to property, mischief over $5,000, theft under $5,000, and breaking and entering to commit an offence.
He appeared in court on Monday, the Mounties said.
