The Ministry of Community Safety has now confirmed that a bear was involved in the incident near McTavish Lake, that claimed the lives of two people. The bear involved has been located and euthanized.
La Ronge RCMP received a call on July 15 about the suspected wildlife-related incident, the province shared in a news release on Thursday. During the investigation, two individuals were found deceased.

The Conservation Officer Service’s wildlife human attack response team has been deployed and is working with the Coroner’s Service and RCMP as they investigate. Conservation officers are working to identify and locate the animal or animals that may have been involved.
McTavish Lake is located about 90 kilometres north of La Ronge.
The Ministry of Community Safety is advising residents, cabin owners, visitors and outdoor recreation users to use caution while outdoors and take steps to avoid wildlife encounters.
In the initial news release, the Ministry of Community Safety said the investigation remains in its early stages. In an update on Friday, the province said the names of the deceased will not be released to the public as the investigation is still underway.
The remains of the bear are being taken to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine for a necropsy.
“The wildlife incident remains under investigation,” the province said in its latest statement. “The RCMP was involved in the initial investigation, but as this death is not considered suspicious in nature, the investigation will now be managed by the Saskatchewan Conservation Officer Service and Coroner’s Service.
“The ministry thanks the RCMP for their support in this investigation.”
The province said no further updates will be provided.
Fatal wildlife attacks remain rare in Saskatchewan, but the province recorded a deadly encounter with a bear just a few months ago. In May, a 27-year-old contractor was killed by a black bear at a remote work site northeast of Points North Landing. That was the fourth recorded fatal black bear attack in Saskatchewan.
