Bhishma Rajyaguru, Jayden Dalke killed in Lumsden Highway 11 crash

Lumsden RCMP released new details late Monday morning on the two-vehicle collision that took the life of Saskatchewan Roughrider Jayden Dalke and another man.

RCMP said Dalke was killed after colliding with another vehicle, being driven by 22-year-old Bhishma Rajyaguru from Regina, who also died at the scene.

According to a release from Lumsden RCMP, the initial investigation determined there was a collision Saturday between a silver SUV driven by Dalke, and a black SUV driven by Rajyaguru.

Dalke’s SUV was travelling north in the southbound lane on Highway 11, between Regina and Lumsden, when the crash happened. Officers found alcohol and cannabis in a search of Dalke’s vehicle, according to the release.

In a news conference, Mandy Maier, Sask. RCMP Director of Strategic Communications, said the police had gotten a call from a business in Lumsden about a half hour before the crash, complaining of a silver SUV leaving without paying for their fuel. Officers found it was the SUV Dalke was driving.

However, Maier also said there were no reports to RCMP about wild driving or a vehicle going the wrong way prior to the crash.

A Saskatchewan RCMP collision reconstructionist is helping Lumsden RCMP with the investigation.

Few details available

Mandy Maier said she couldn’t answer a number of questions, including how much cannabis or alcohol was in the vehicle, how long the silver SUV was heading in the wrong direction, or when the toxicology report would be finished.

“There’s a lot we can’t say right now – collision reconstruction investigations take months to complete, toxicology and autopsy are not yet done, and we need to be very mindful of that as part of the responses that I provide,” said Maier.

Sask. RCMP didn’t even acknowledge the Saturday night crash had happened until Monday morning. Maier said an initial release could have been sent out sooner.

She said more information was released in this case than would normally be, but because both the people involved in the crash are dead, there may not be any more information given to the public.

“If there’s no formal public court process, there’s no authority for the RCMP to release those specific details,” said Maier.

According to RCMP, Rajyaguru was in the other SUV and died in the crash.

A GoFundMe campaign was started on Sunday to help send Rajyaguru’s remains home to his family in India.

The explanation on the campaign called him “a beautiful soul, a best friend, and a beacon of light,” and called the incident “a senseless tragedy that has shattered the hearts of everyone who knew him.”

The campaign said he came to Canada in 2022 with big dreams, and that he was a responsible son, honest friend, and a talented and passionate musician.

“To know him was to know kindness, loyalty, and an infectious love for life. His future was incredibly bright, and his absence leaves a void that words simply cannot describe,” read the campaign.

By noon on Monday, the campaign had raised more than $64,000.
