Saskatchewan personal care home recovering after food stolen

A heist in the small town of Bangor, south of Yorkton, has left a personal care home struggling after thieves stole a significant amount of food.

Sometime either late on Sept. 3 or early Sept. 4 freezers storing the food in a shed behind Morris Lodge were raided and left all but empty.

“It’s just terrible. Who would steal from a home?” said executive director Cherylynn Walters.

“We’re talking close to a $10,000 loss because we buy in bulk.”

Walters said almost all the home’s beef was taken, and chicken, pork, and fish supplies were cleaned out.

“They stole vegetables,” Walters said. “The only thing they didn’t steal was bread, but they took pie crusts and tart crusts and everything.”

Police are investigating. Walters said she has no idea who could have committed the crime but believes it must have been someone with knowledge of how the home operates.

“It had to be somebody that’s familiar with us because they would have had to know that’s what that shed was used for,” Walters said.

“I don’t even know what they would have done with all the food because, I mean, an average family does not have five deep freezers.”

Fourteen residents currently live in Morris Lodge, but it can house up to 20. Walters said recovering from the theft goes beyond just replacing the lost food.

“Now we have to set up a security system, and the back area is where the staff park, and so we’re going to have to gate that area so no vehicles can get in at all except staff.”

Walters said this is the first time something like this has happened in the 50-year history of Morris Lodge. She said the residents are upset about the theft, but that has been tempered somewhat by the generous response from the community.

“We have had some meat donated right away,” Walters said.

“We’ve got a delivery of pork coming today, and people are donating money to help us buy our security system and replenish our food.”
