According to the Wadena/Foam Lake RCMP, the initial investigation shows that a pickup truck collided with an SUV while trying to pass a semi-truck.
The impact killed three people inside the SUV. Paramedics pronounced the driver and two passengers dead at the scene. Mounties have identified the victims as a 40-year-old woman, an eight-year-old girl, and a five-year-old girl. All three lived in Foam Lake.
A third passenger from the SUV, an adult man, survived the crash but suffered serious injuries. He was rushed to hospital by STARS air ambulance.
The crash also sent three people from the pickup truck to the hospital. Police said the driver and one passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries, while STARS flew a second passenger to hospital with serious injuries.
The semi-truck driver escaped without any injuries, and the semi itself was not damaged.
Following the initial scene investigation, police arrested and charged a 40-year-old man from Sumter, South Carolina.
He faces three counts of dangerous driving causing death and three counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm. He remains in custody and is scheduled to make his first appearance in Yorkton Provincial Court on Oct. 5.
Local RCMP officers are continuing to investigate the crash with the help of a specialized Saskatchewan RCMP collision reconstructionist.
Up until Sept. 29 RCMP said there have been 69 fatal collisions with 82 associated fatalities on roads in Saskatchewan RCMP jurisdiction this year.
