An investigation is underway in Saskatoon after two fires broke out within half an hour of each other a few blocks from St. Paul’s Hospital.
Shortly after 9 a.m. on Oct. 22, 2026, witnesses reported seeing flames and heavy smoke coming from an abandoned home near 20th Street and Avenue N South.

Tyler Gregory lives nearby and said he was asleep when he heard fire engines roar past his window.
“I realized that they turned at the corner here, and I’m like, ‘Oh crap, there’s a fire!’ I see light smoke popping up into the air, and then I’m like, ‘I gotta go home and grab my phone’!”

According to Saskatoon Fire, crews spotted smoke coming from the rear of the building.
Firefighters knocked down the flames from outside using their hose lines.
“Once the exterior fire was knocked down, crews used forcible entry tools to enter the boarded-up house to search and confirm no occupants were inside.”
Contractor Tyler Franson watched as crews brought the fire under control.
He says a Vancouver-based rental agency hired him to work on the property, which had sat abandoned for about two months.
“It’s been boarded up, and the tenants were evicted. We’ve had a couple of people camped out in the backyard, just using the property as a place to hang out.”
Franson said he has noticed the state of the neighbourhood.
“Just seeing the homelessness and addiction issues that cause people to end up in properties that are abandoned or not lived in. It’s been quite an experience.”
There were no injuries, and it took crews nearly two hours to extinguish the blaze.
“It’s just baffling”
Meanwhile, Saskatoon Fire crews noticed smoke pouring from a detached garage a few doors down.
Firefighters drove a truck to the rear of the property and attacked the flames with a hose line.

Within minutes, crews extinguished the blaze.
Saskatoon Fire said no one was hurt as a result of that incident.
“A fire investigator is on scene to conduct an examination to identify the cause, origin and damage estimate.”
Gregory believes this was the fourth fire-related incident in the area in the past two to three weeks.
“It’s just baffling my mind because of how crazy it was.”
