For the first time in about 20 years, the City of Saskatoon is making a change to the structure of taxi fares for large vehicles.
Under the previous system, taxi vans charged 150 per cent of the standard rate when transporting more passengers or cargo than could be accommodated in a sedan, a measure that the city said was in place to help cab companies recover the additional cost of operating larger vehicles.

The city said the new system, which took effect Monday, means a special large-vehicle fare of $9.50 will be applied whenever a cab with third-row seating is requested through dispatch for any reason or is hailed at the curb by a group of five passengers or more.
“The new fare more accurately reflects the current operating and ownership costs of larger vehicles compared to sedan taxis,” the City of Saskatoon said in a statement.
“The updated fare structure provides greater consistency and transparency for passengers while ensuring fares better align with the cost of providing larger vehicle service.”
