Democrat Johnny Garcia won election Wednesday to the U.S. House of Representatives representing Texas’ 35th Congressional District, defeating Republican Carlos De La Cruz. Garcia’s victory came despite an effort by Republicans to redraw the district’s lines to make it more favorable for them. A Bexar County sheriff’s deputy, Garcia called himself an “old school” Democrat with more moderate views. De La Cruz, an Air Force veteran, had Donald Trump’s endorsement and billed himself as a conservative backer of the president. The Associated Press declared Garcia the winner at 1:23 a.m. EST.
