Hunting season is getting started in Saskatchewan, and the provincial government is encouraging everyone to keep safety at the forefront and ensure they’re following the law.
The Government of Saskatchewan reminded hunters to ensure they have the correct licences and said all hunters should familiarize themselves with provincial regulations, which can be found in the 2026-27 Saskatchewan Hunters Guide. The province also emphasized the importance of safe firearms handling and obtaining permission before accessing private land to hunt.

“It is up to all of us as responsible firearms owners and hunters to uphold Saskatchewan’s strong tradition of firearms safety,” Saskatchewan Firearms Commissioner Blaine Beaven said in a statement.
“Remember, always be aware of your target, your line of fire and your surrounding environment before discharging a firearm. And above all, when in doubt, do not shoot.”
The province pointed to a recent case in which conservation officers patrolling at night in the Porcupine Provincial Forest allegedly saw the occupants of a vehicle using a spotlight while hunting and standing in the box of a truck as it was driven down the roadway.
Four people from Manitoba face wildlife charges as a result, the province said, and three guns were seized.
“All four individuals appeared in court in Hudson Bay on October 1, 2026, and pleaded guilty to using a searchlight for the purpose of hunting wildlife,” the Saskatchewan government noted.
Each of the Manitoba hunters was fined $1,400 and handed a three-year hunting suspension, while the seized guns were forfeited to the Crown.
“Conservation officers play a vital role in protecting Saskatchewan’s natural resources while helping to keep communities safe,” Community Safety Minister Michael Weger said in a statement.
“Hunting at night significantly increases safety risks due to reduced visibility and challenges in identifying targets, surroundings and other people in the area. Unsafe and unlawful hunting activities put people, wildlife and property at risk. Our government supports strong enforcement efforts that help ensure hunting activities are carried out safely, legally and responsibly.”
Weger’s comments were echoed by Environment Minister Darlene Rowden, who said Saskatchewan’s hunting regulations are designed to ensure both the province’s natural areas and its wildlife remain healthy.
“Our laws are in place to make sure wildlife populations remain healthy and sustainable, and the environment is protected,” Rowden said in a statement. “We appreciate the important work conservation officers do, enforcing the law and holding offenders accountable.”
