Jamie Nye: Fake injuries happen, deal with it

It was a text to the Green Zone post game show that had me digging: a fan listening to the Winnipeg post game show on CJOB with the hall of famer Bob Irving and fellow hall of famer and former defensive lineman Doug Brown.

Matt Nichols was on and asked about the fake injuries that felled a few members of the Roughriders, he said if they want to be soccer players they should play soccer.

Doug Brown was pushing the angle and wrote about it in an article for the Winnipeg Free Press calling out the Roughriders for a new strategic low in the Canadian Football League.

But I know for a fact, Doug Brown knows his former teammates, and maybe he himself, took one for the team for an extra time out. It happens.

Our Glen Suitor calls it the oldest trick in the book. As far as changing rules, as Brown alludes is necessary, no. No official should be in the game to dissect if a player is actually injured, and what if he did call a penalty on a player who is actually injured? That’s even more embarrassing than the fake injury is.

It happens. Every team does it. And it definitely wasn’t the difference in a 14 point loss or caused the three touchdowns the Riders scored in the first quarter.
