After nearly a decade, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft has come closer to Pluto than ever before.
The moment happened at 5:49 a.m. on Tuesday morning. The journey from planet Earth that spanned an incredible 4.8 billion kilometres and 9 1/2 years.
Studying Pluto’s temperature and terrain will help scientists understand the evolution of solar systems like our own, according to Jesse Rogerson, researcher at Toronto’s York University.
The icy dwarf planet was discovered in 1930.
