Edward Frank is back at home and in good spirits after being rescued by STARS ambulance Wednesday morning.
The 89-year-old man from Sweetgrass First Nation drove to a remote area near the Battlefords on Tuesday to hunt.
“I took my rifle with me and I thought maybe if I’d seen some grouse or hens I’d shoot them – and then I got stuck,” he said.
Frank had a cell phone and a portable phone with him, but both of them died before he could call for help.
“I was just helpless. I didn’t have no blanket or nothing, I was really cold!”
Police received a call at around 9 p.m. from Frank’s nephew who was concerned that he hadn’t returned.
Officers tried to patrol the area for the missing man but recent rain and dense brush made some trails impassable.
RCMP decided to contact STARS from Saskatoon to help with the search.
The helicopter was able to spot Frank’s truck northeast of Sweetgrass First Nation at around 2:30 a.m. Frank was taken to hospital and released right away.
Frank said he plans to pull his truck out with the help of his nephew, but he won’t be hunting by himself again.
“Don’t do that when you’re 90 years old, don’t stray off.”
