Police in Estevan will be out checking for impaired drivers this weekend as the police chief sees red.
Chief Paul Ladouceur is frustrated the message about drunk driving isn’t getting through after several recent crashes, including one fatal.
“We get these stark reminders every now and again when we have these catastrophic incidents,” said Ladouceur.
“If you hop behind the wheel of a car impaired, that’s a choice, and it’s a criminal offense and people need to realize that.”
Ladouceur explained officers will be doing stop checks in Estevan this weekend.
“If you’re driving on city streets in this city you will be stopped. You will be stopped because the law clearly states that we are allowed to stop you to conducts random checks.”
He said he thinks people have the right to get into a car without fearing an impaired driver.
Ladouceur said it’s too early to say whether the oil downturn and people losing their jobs has contributed to the impaired driving problem.
