Brad Wall chairs last cabinet meeting, empties office

Brad Wall chaired his final cabinet meeting as premier Wednesday.

And despite it being the end of an era for him, Wall was taking a lighthearted approach to his final days on the job.

“I mean I announced this thing in August and I am still here so it’s felt a little bit like, you know, an interminable Rolling Stones farewell tour,” Wall laughed.” And I guess like Keith Richards, I may look a little rough but I’m feeling pretty good.”

There are no lingering regrets over his decision to retire from politics having consistently said it was the “right time.”

His office has also been emptied of personal items, such as photos and mementos. Only three football helmets remained on display.

“I rarely called it my office and that was intentional. It’s the premier’s office, the landlords are the people of the province and I was just the tenant for 10 years, happy to be the tenant, it’s a pretty special room,” Wall said. “Now, next week, there will be a new tenant that is renting out that space for a little bit.”

Wall contended that the legislature has been a great place to work and especially the cabinet room, which is largely untouched from 1912 — only the carpet has been replaced.

As a final touch, Wall had a wooden plaque placed above the door with the words, “have you left things better than you found them” on it. A message he hopes future cabinet minister of any political stripe will see.

The Saskatchewan Party votes for his replacement on Saturday.
