A half-a-billion dollar expansion of the Queen Elizabeth Power Station near Saskatoon is finished.
The newly commissioned ‘D plant’ adds 204 mega-watts of capacity to the power station, enough power for more than 200,000 homes.
SaskPower president and CEO Mike Marsh said the expansion is a critical investment for the province’s electrical infrastructure, adding the growing demand for power is expected to grow 13 per cent in the next five years.
The $525 million expansion upgraded three natural gas turbines to boost efficiency by 10 to 15 per cent. With Thursday’s announcement, the power station becomes the number one generating source in the province surpassing conventional coal.
