Two men are dead after the helicopter they were in crashed Thursday afternoon.
The pair were putting aerial markers on a new power line crossing the North Saskatchewan River in the area of Paynton, about 57 km northwest of the Battlefords. SaskPower confirmed they were contract workers doing the work as part of building a new substation near the Village of Edam.
A witness at the scene told CJNB of North Battleford that the helicopter crashed on an island in the river. Water rescue crews could be seen launching from the area near the Paynton ferry crossing.
According to a news release from RCMP, the 55-year-old pilot and 30-year-old passenger died at the scene. The 55-year-old is from Campbell River, BC while the 30-year-old is from Prince Albert.
The Transportation Safety Board is now investigating the crash. RCMP have notified Occupational Health and Safety.
