Other than the horrible postgame celebrations in Philadelphia, two things nearly spoiled the Super Bowl:
Video reviews and the NFL’s implausible, inane and stupid definition of a catch.
Every scoring play in an NFL game has to be reviewed by its video officials. For a change, the video officials did not disallow any touchdowns or field goals scored by the Philadelphia Eagles or New England Patriots. They decided that the touchdown receptions made by Eagles running back Corey Clement and tight end Zach Ertz were legitimate, scoring PLAYS.
The rest of the world knew those were real, football catches, but the NFL’s official definition questions whenever a receiver hits the ground, so the video reviews took forever to approve the touchdowns.
At least NFL commissioner Roger Goodell knows it’s a problem. He told the media the league intends to completely overhaul the complicated rule and put a re-written version into the rulebook. It needs to be simplified.
Here’s a suggestion: if it looks like a catch, it’s a catch.
