After 66 years, the Luther Invitational Basketball Tournament (LIT) continues to provide inspiration for student athletes.
LIT is one of the longest-running tournaments in the Queen City and features athletes from schools in Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba.
Troy Casper, LIT director, remembers watching the tournament 27 years ago as a Grade 8 student.
“I knew I wanted to play in that tournament.”
Josh Fraser is a Grade 12 student at Luther Collegiate High School and plays on the boys’ basketball team.
He said it’s good to play games against teams coming from other provinces.
“We kinda got to step up and go play different competition,” Fraser said. “It’s nice to see different teams and how they play.”
This is also the first year featuring a full girls’ tournament with eight teams.
Logan Lindskog plays on the Luther girls’ team and is excited to take part in the first tournament.
“It’s very inspiring for girls, even that are younger, that have the chance now to strive towards playing in the tournament,” Lindskog said.
The tournament is also a chance for University teams to scout some of the top high school basketball talent.
The tournament will wrap up on Saturday.
