An investigation has been launched which is looking into online comments about Colten Boushie allegedly made by an RCMP officer.
On Thursday, APTN reported screenshots of a post made in a private Facebook group made up of officers serving on the prairies.
“Too bad the kid died but he got what he deserved. How many of us work on or near reserves and are getting fed up with the race card being used every time someone gets caught breaking the law?” the post read.
980 CJME has only seen the APTN report and has not verified the Facebook post nor the person who wrote it nor whether are in fact a member of the RCMP.
But speaking to reporters in a conference call the same day, Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale called the post “appalling.”
“It is being pursued, the facts are being determined and examined,” Goodale confirmed. “If they turn out to be what they appear to be, this is unacceptable and there will be consequences.”
The RCMP follows a code of conduct which includes social media and extends to when a member is off duty.
“The damage to credibility is very serious and that’s why we are treating this in a very serious way,” Goodale said. “Canadians of every background in every part of the country in every walk of life needs to be able to trust their police force.”
Goodale went on to say it will take “an enormous effort to restore the kind of damage that this remark would have done.”
Boushie was shot dead after he and four friends, after a day of drinking, went onto Gerald Stanley’s farm near Biggar in August 2016.
Stanley was acquitted of second-degree murder last week.
