Praise the pundits who immediately said the Montreal Canadiens got totally fleeced when they traded P.K. Subban to the Nashville Predators for Shea Weber. Not every trade takes years and years to assess.
There were lots of statistical comparisons, including their contracts and the fact Weber is four years older. For the first little while after the 2016 deal, it looked like a saw-off because Weber and Subban were scoring at a similar pace. Then Subban played a major role in Nashville’s resurgence, helping the Predators into last year’s Stanley Cup final series against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Meanwhile, the Canadiens keep falling deeper and deeper in the standings.
Subban was evidently not a popular teammate in Montreal. Weber was supposed to be a great locker-room guy, but now he’s out for the rest of the season with a foot injury. Injuries aren’t predictable, but this one just makes the trade look worse.
