Weather conditions were cold but clear Friday morning after blowing snow and ice wreaked havoc on highways across southern Saskatchewan causing multiple crashes Thursday afternoon.
Texters to CJME began reporting low visibility around 3:30 p.m. About a half hour later, White Butte RCMP reported a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 1 near the Pinkie Road overpass.
Highway 1 was closed in both directions near Belle Plaine for a few hours after a multi-vehicle crash. RCMP said Moose Jaw EMS assessed eight people at the scene and five were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
A few hours later another crash closed Highway 6 just south of Regina
By Friday morning driving conditions had improved, but there were still reports of glare ice and drifting snow to the west and south of Regina. Check the Highway Hotline for updated conditions.
Brian Mackenzie was trying to get home to Moose Jaw in whiteout conditions when he wound up in the middle of the crash. His van is outfitted with cameras and he posted several videos and pictures to Facebook showing the crash as it happened.
