It is a bad time of year for hundreds of welfare cheques to arrive late, but the Saskatchewan Ministry of Social Services confirmed on Friday that is the case.
There has been a delay at the printing and mailing service contractor resulting in up to 800 mid-month cheques arriving late in December.
The ministry said the delay is expected to be two to three days.
“We expect most of the cheques have likely arrived already although there could be a small number that could arrive early next week,” said Jeff Redekop, executive director with Income Assistance Service Delivery with the Ministry of Social Services.
Redekop pointed out the ministry is ready to help people who cannot wait the extra few days.
“We can issue a same-day cheque right from our office for those who can’t wait the extra two or three days. Also we have emergency requisitions that can be given to individuals.”
Redekop explained most people receive their cheques on a monthly basis but there are a select few who get theirs in the middle of the month.
Redekop wants people to contact the ministry if they are having problems with the delay. The Income Assistance number is 1-866-221-5200.
